DIED. Bill Terry, 90, first baseman and manager of the old New
York Giants, who compiled a lifetime batting average of .341 and
was the last National League player to hit above .400 in a season
(.401 in 1930); in Jacksonville. A left-handed hitter who rarely
struck out, Terry spent his major-league playing career (1923-36)
with the Giants. As manager, he won three pennants and one World
Series title (1933).
